ENMU Panhellenic

September 29, 2015

Panhellenic held a gathering for the local sororities on campus on Sept. 23. The event was held for new and current members and alumnae to participate in a barbeque, crafts and conversation with members from both chapters.

Panhellenic is the governing body that oversees the sororities on campus. The offices are held by women from both chapters to represent each chapter equally. The purpose of the meetings held is to keep competition at bay between the two sororities, as are the events sponsored by them.

This event, for new members, is a chance to meet girls from the other sorority who are going through the same experience. Older members and alumnae help the new members branch out and understand that even though their letters are different, their ideals and morals are the same.

“I didn’t have the chance to have a party like this as a recruit,” Debra Thompson, a senior Biology major, said. “It’s nice to know that, as a whole, we share the same values.”

Thompson, President of the Delta Pi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, also believes that the get together helps intensify the friendships, not only between the girls, but between the chapters as well. Although they have different rituals and personalities, they are striving for the same goal, to help the girls find who they truly are as a person, according to Thompson.

Greek Advisor Sue “SueB” Bracksieck said she holds the chapters she advises to the same high standard with academics, ideals, morals and creativity . She believes the only difference between the two chapters is the personalities each one holds. Meaning that one chapter might be a better fit for a certain girl than the other depending on her character.

“I can’t imagine a better group of girls to advise,” Bracksieck said. “Every year it keeps getting better with every new formal recruitment.”
