October 6, 2015

The Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents recently held a meeting on Friday, October 2.

Regents present included Terry Othick, Dr. Dan Patterson, Veronica Ayala, Susan Tatum and campus president Steven Gamble.

During routine meeting matters, student recruiting and retention were discussed and the Board of Regents were updated on the building of the new stadium.

The stadium’s budget now totals approximately $14.5 million, according to ENMU Foundation President Steven Doerr. The Foundation is working on paperless scholarships applications to help students when applying to scholarships in the spring, according to Doerr.

Executive Director of the ENMU Foundation Noelle Bartl and Director of Alumni Affairs Robert Graham discussed the Stadium Brick Campaign, citing that almost 300 bricks have been sold already. Bartl and Graham discussed the upcoming Homecoming 2015 Weekend, citing events being held and various alumni who deserve future recognition as “outstanding alumni.”

The presidents of ENMU-Roswell, Dr. John Madden, and ENMU-Ruidoso, Clayton Alred, presented their school’s enrollment for the current academic year. Both presidents said that enrollment has dropped.

Executive Director of Planning and Analysis Dr. Patrice Caldwell discussed the newly implemented Title V grant, which partners Eastern with Clovis Community College over a period of five years in order to identify and provide solutions for three areas: retention, increasing the amount of students choosing to go into teaching careers and professional development of faculty and staff.

Also present was Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jamie Laurenz, who discussed the student retention efforts of the university. He said, “ENMU is the institution who is the most understanding in their mission, and who is focused on their mission.”

Laurenz discussed the developmental education program put into place that focuses on different tracks for mathematics in different majors. He also discussed the advising center and how the university will continue to change their approach in advising freshman students properly.
