Final Homecoming at Blackwater Draw
Greyhounds leave their final homecoming game at Blackwater Draw Stadium on a great note.
With Eastern New Mexico University‘s new stadium already in progress, this marks the final homecoming game the Greyhounds football team will play at Blackwater Draw. After a couple of lightning delays before and in the middle of the fourth quarter, the hounds were able to come out with the win.
The Greyhounds got on the board first after a six play opening possession when Kamal Cass ran the ball in for a one yard touchdown. This touchdown gave Cass his first of four in the game. Few minutes later Elliot Peters picks off the Javelinas, running the interception back 74 yards, putting ENMU up fourteen to zero early in the first quarter. The defense played exceptionally well, as they only allowed one score with about two minutes left in the first, giving them the 14 to 7 lead heading into the second quarter.
The hounds kept the momentum from the first going in the second putting up another 14 points. Kamal Cass recorded his second touchdown of the game early in the quarter as he runs in for a six yard touchdown, the hounds then had the 21to 7 lead. After a Kingsville field goal trimmed the score, D’Maujeric Tucker takes it all the way back 56 yards giving the Greyhounds an even bigger room to breathe 28 to 10. Eastern finished the competitive final homecoming first half with the two score lead over the Kingsville Javelinas.
Kamal Cass kicks off the third just as he did in the first and second quarters with another touchdown run. This time Cass rushed for a huge 55 yard score, again putting pressure on Kingsville to score going up 35 to 17. With almost one minute to go in the third, Jeremy Buurma throws the 46 yard bomb to Adrian Horton giving his team the 41 to 32 lead after two straight scores for Kingsville. ENMU put up another 14 points in the third quarter.
The fourth and final quarter saw a lightning delay once again with about eight minutes to go in the game. The delay caused an hour and a half set back, but once the weather cleared up, the boys in green finished off Kingsville by a score of 56 to 31. Tayshaun Gary gave ENMU their first score in the quarter after the delay, running for the three yard touchdown. The Greyhounds Football team did not allow any points in the fourth, but Kamal Cass scored his fourth touchdown of the night after a six yard run. The running game seemed as if it could not be stopped on Saturday, as the Hounds out did the Javelinas in rushing touchdowns six to one. Also, out rushing Kingsville 421 yards to a lone 99 yards.
The weather was cloudy Saturday afternoon as Blackwater Draw held its final homecoming game of its career, possibly explaining the rain. ENMU did in fact thank the stadium for over 40 years of exciting homecoming games leaving with a special Greyhound Football team win.
