Halloween Costume Ball

In a dark room, a strong man wears a bag over his head to hide his face. His shirt is ragged and his jeans tattered. He was waving a long knife and chasing people. This is not a scene in from the Friday the 13th series, but a person at the Halloween Costume Ball on Wednesday, October 28th.

The Halloween Costume Ball returned to ENMU after two years. This year, it was held in the ballroom and about a hundred people came. People danced while dressed in a variety of costumes.

Some of them dressed like pirates, such as Jack Sparrow from the Black Pearl in Pirates of the Caribbean. Some dressed like witches or as students from the house of Slytherin and Gryffindor in Harry Potter. Others dressed as killers like Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street or Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th series. Some even dressed like princesses, such as Snow White.

Free drinks were served while the DJ played music. People were chatting, dancing and taking pictures with one another.

"This has been my third time that I participated [in] the costume ball," said Caroline Xiao, a senior from the college of business. "I went [in] 2011 and 2012."

Xiao dressed as super Mario and zombie hunter in previous years, respectively. This year she chose to be a female Freddy. She thought it was interesting to go to the Halloween costume ball. "Also, I can learn about American culture," She said.

The dancing competition impressed Xiao and believed it was new this year. She remembered the first year she went to the costume ball, there were tables and chairs in the ballroom, which was largely different from this year, but she thought it was better to have this layout which allowed people to participate more.

Then the dancing competition started. All the people made a circle and people who wanted to compete stepped forward. There were about ten people who participate.

The dancers started a battle with solo and group dances. The winning team was determined by the loudest cheers from the audience.

“I was impressed by the man who dressed like Jason, another killer. He did great and also [liked it] because I dressed like the other well-known killer, Freddy,” Xiao said
