Anonymous

Anonymous is a loosely associated international network of activists and hacktivist enthusiasts.

This organization goes back 12 years when a 15-year-old boy named Christopher Pool created a chat forum called 4chan. People were given the opportunity to use this site to recruit others for elaborate online pranks. Because the site offered the option of posting anonymously, they began to call themselves Anonymous and have carried that identity since. It wasn't until 2008 that the organization decided to be more than a group seeking laughs on the Internet. Anonymous organized a series of protests against the Church of Scientology.

Since then the organization has taken part in exposing and taking down different groups, elected officials and major corporations all over the world. Anonymous serves as an online vigilante, holding no bias against who they take down. Their mission is to be an agent of truth and justice among a world of darkness.

The recent act pulled off by anonymous, which has received much publicity, is the exposure and names of active Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members. The exposure of the KKK members took place exactly one year after the Ferguson riots began. The conflict between Anonymous and the Ku Klux Klan began when KKK members stated that they would use lethal force towards peaceful protesters during the Ferguson riots. The list released by Anonymous included identities of nearly 400 people, email addresses, Facebook pages and much more. In a message released by anonymous on Twitter, they stated:

"The Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist group. The blood of thousands of human beings are on the hands of Klansman. In most of Anonymous members’ eyes the KKK no longer has the right to express their racist bigoted opinions."

The organization first released that they would be exposing 1000 members of the KKK but stated that they removed several names from the list for further investigation. For the sake of having a smaller accurate list rather than exposing someone who is innocent.

A representative of Anonymous recently told the Guardian:

"We are trying to change our world. No further comment."
