Entering a new school or job can be a trying obstacle for anyone. A new place, combined with new culture and not knowing the lay of the land can be difficult, but new Athletic Director Greg Waggoner has managed his new role with grace.

This is not the first time that Waggoner has had to be such a big role at a university. His resume takes him back to Western State Colorado University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He was the athletic director there from 1994-2014. With 20 years experience under his belt, he is a seasoned veteran to say the very least.

Although he is new to Portales, he is not new to the area.

“The Rocky Mountain athletic conference and Lone Star Conference compete against each other in a lot of things” said Waggoner. His work and family have brought him from Colorado down to New Mexico many times throughout his career.

“I was honored to have been offered a position here (ENMU),” said Waggoner.

Waggoner’s respect for Dr. Gamble and what he has done for the university attracted him here.

“What Dr. Gamble has done here is beyond remarkable,” said Dr. Waggoner. He was in awe of all the potential that Eastern has to offer and is excited to become a part of the Greyhound family.

For the past ten years, ENMU has been revamping new buildings, and making changes for the students in order to create the successful experiences that the students want.

Waggoner is focused on creating an environment where alumni, students, and athletes, a like can have an amazing time and create beautiful memories.

“All of that is about the college experience,” said Waggoner.

One of Waggoner’s main goals is to not leave anyone out when it comes to the college experience, because although he is the athletic director, he is also contributing to the way the world views our slice of heaven here in Portales.
