When the holidays come around in college, the lack of decorations can feel depressing. If you’re wishing to add festivity to your dorm room or house but have a limited budget, these fall home crafts are a great way to do so.
Glass vase ($1 at Dollar Tree)
Assorted artificial leaves ($1 at Dollar Tree)
Mod Podge (Approximately $6 at Wal Mart)
Foam brush ($1 at Dollar Tree)
Optional: tea light or other small candle ($1 at Dollar Tree)
I used the Mod Podge gloss, which dries clear.
Step one: Begin by coating the vase with Mod Podge. Once the vase is coated, begin sticking leaves to the surface. Then, go over the top of them with a coat of Mod Podge. The result will be messy, but keep in mind that the Mod Podge dries clear and will act as glue and a sealant.

Step two: Once you have placed the leaves where you wish, go back over the surface of the glass to brush out any thick runs on the Mod Podge.
Step three: Allow the vase to dry for at least two hours.
Step four: Place a tea light candle in the votive and light or fill with string lights/anything you would like.
DIY Nightmare Before Christmas Sharpie Mug
Permanent marker (black, $1 at Dollar Tree)
White coffee mug ($1 at Dollar Tree)
Not pictured: An oven (If you live in the dorms, you may use the ovens in either Curry Hall or Eddy Hall for this craft)
Step one: Draw two oval eyes and a nose made up of two small lines. Do not worry about making the eyes perfect since they will be colored in later.
Step two: Draw a long mouth on the face.
Step three: Add stitches to the smile.
Step four: Color in the eyes and put the mug into the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes to protect the permanent marker from coming off of the mug when washed.
Quick tips: If you make a mistake with the permanent marker before baking, it can be removed off of the mug with fingernail polish remover. Place the mug in before the oven has preheated so that it can increase temperature slowly, which ensures that the mug will not crack.
Allow the oven to cool off before removing the mug for the same reason.
Put the mug into the oven for 30 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
The finished product - perfect for apple cider, coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
Enjoy your affordable DIY fall crafts. Happy Halloween!
