Raising Funds for Forensics

The Forensic Science Society (FSS) of Eastern New Mexico University eagerly awaits February 13-18 where they will attend the American Academy of Forensic Sciences’ 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA. The conference will highlight the most current research, updates, information, and technology in the expanding field of Forensic Sciences.

Forensic Science Society President, Norma Ibarra, firmly believes that a leader is only as good as the members of the group, “I want our organization to be able to expand their education beyond the confines of the classroom.” To assist with this, the FSS continues to hold fundraising events on campus to please participants and bring in additional cash to contribute to club expenses.

Members of the FSS will be holding a prize raffle with contributions from various business organizations in the community. The sale of raffle tickets will take place on January 30 through February 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Campus Union Building (CUB) lobby on Eastern New Mexico University’s campus. Interested participants can also purchase tickets from any active members of the FSS.

Winners of the $5 raffle have the chance to win a necklace from Woody’s Jewelry, a Soda Stream Sparkling Water Maker from Ace Hardware, a FSS t-shirt, and a gift certificate to Juanito’s Mexican Restaurant. $1 raffle ticket winners have the chance to win gift certificates to other participating local restaurants and haircuts from Hair Haven Salon.

The American Association of Forensic Science allows attendees of the meeting the opportunity to meet thousands of forensic scientists, researchers, and professionals. Additionally, members can bring copies of their resumes to distribute to potential employers and graduate programs.

“The beauty about this conference is that there is something for everyone,” said Ibarra. She trusts that this meeting will assist members to find what direction they want to go after graduation, as well as allow them to learn more about what their ambitions are for the future.
