Modifications bring forth change and excitement to on any college campus. Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) is no exception as it kicked off the new year with renovations for Spring 2017.
In addition to enhancing its compliance with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), the Natatorium (ENMU Swimming Pool) will focus on enhancing five areas of safety: 1) installing handicap accessibility inside and outside the facility 2) updating shower and locker rooms 3) leveling steps inside the pool 4) replacing tile with slip resistant flooring 5) moving boilers to help preserve and protect equipment.
With renovations expected to be completed by the end of March, ENMU students wait eagerly to access the Natatorium. “We use that [Natatorium] a lot so it being updated makes us excited because it was falling apart,” says Jordan Keimig, a freshman majoring in Math and Business. “I do think it’s going to make it more fun for the Softball team and I.
”The most evident factor of this project—time. While trying to determine the schedule for renovations, Ted Fares, Director of Physical Plant, recalls, “We tried to limit the time as small as possible so people [can] start using the pool, but there wasn’t any time to pick because its busy all the time.”
These renovations will not only benefit the students and faculty of ENMU, but also the community members of Portales, New Mexico. “I know a lot of Senior Citizens who get their swimming lessons in there. It’s really going to benefit a lot of them,” says Marquez Hobson, ENMU communication graduate student. Looking forward to seeing the completed facility in its glory.
