Eastern New Mexico University provides a diverse learning experience for both traditional and non-traditional alike. For some experiences, returning to civilian life can be challenging. The ENMU Students Veteran Organization (SVO) was established to provide a bridge for veteran students who are facing multiple and different challenges.

Veterans serving 90 days after September 10, 2001 were honorably discharged and eligible for the post 9/11 G.I. Bill which offers tuition assistance and living expenses for veterans returning to school. Currently there are 164 student veterans utilizing the G. I. Bill at Eastern.

The SVO is a fairly small group with about 5 active members, as it is more of a “networking group.” SVO Vice President Kimberly Harwan, and Air Force reservist, hopes to see the number of active members rise. Harwan stated she plans on “tabling in the CUB to get the word out.” She further stated the mission of the SVO is to “provide resources to student veterans” as well as “giving student veterans a safe place to be themselves.” Currently, the SVO offers assistance with paperwork and scholarship information.

Dr. Schneider, SVO faculty advisor and a U.S. Army veteran, also wants to see the SVO grow in membership. Schneider stated, the group may be called Students Veteran Organization, but it is not “only exclusive to veteran students” as anyone is welcome in the group. Dr. Schneider also hopes for the SVO to become more involved with the community as well as Cannon Air Force Base.

The SVO currently does not have a set meeting time or place, however if you are interested or have questions you may contact Dr. Schneider at or Kimberly Harwan at
