Coach Spence's First Season With Greyhounds

September 5, 2017

The Eastern New Mexico Lady Greyhound’s soccer team kicked off the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at Greyhound stadium. The team played Fort Lewis College and tied 2-2 in a game that went into overtime.

This will be Ryan Spence’s first season as the lady greyhounds head coach. Before this Spence coached at Midwestern and Texas A&M international. When asked about the atmosphere here at ENMU, Spence said he likes it and believes that the small town and student involvement will help tremendously, especially after the team gets some wins under their belt.

The biggest goal this off season was for the ladies to learn the system and principles that Coach Spence wanted to instill. For example, he said that he wanted to stick to one or two solid formations and not switch it up all the time. Spence added that he believes “Winning is a mentality and its contagious. Same as losing” but thinks that the eagerness of the girls to turn the program around will help him build his system up and be able to stick with it.

Coach Ryan Spence says that his expectations for the season are to “compete every game and stay injury free”. A couple of players in which he expects to handle his teachings on the field, during games and even practices are Kaitlin Caro and Ariel Lopez. Spence expects them not only to be vocal leaders but lead by example as well. Living up to these expectations could be crucial as the team is a very young group with 15 out of the 30-person roster being new to the team. That could be a downfall for them this year, but in a year or two that could be one of their greatest assets. If Spence can stick with the mentality and consistent style of play like he hopes to be able to this group could be scary good in the years to come.
