Kentucky: 15-Year-Old Charged With Two Counts of Murder

Two people were killed, and an additional 14 people were wounded in a school shooting at Marshall County High School in Draffenville, KY on Tuesday morning 8:57 a.m. (Jan. 23, 2018).

Students had attempted to contact their loved ones via phone, text, and FaceTime, but few made contact. One of those students, Taylor Droke, a junior at Marshall, arrived late only to find students and faculty in mass panic. According to NBC News, Droke said, “You could see students dropping their bags and just start running, pushing past each other. Everyone in cars started turning around and driving away. Kids were jumping the fence around the school and running through the woods.” Thanks to FaceTime, Droke was able to contact her mother and inform her of the situation.

While many students were reunited with their loved ones, police have identified two bodies as Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, both 15 years of age. According to Kentucky State Police Commissioner Richard W. Sanders, Holt was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cope passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Daniel Austin, a 17-year-old student with special needs, was shot in the arm. After learning of the shooting, his mother, Andrea Austin, frantically drove to the hospital where he was being kept. “Teachers love him. Students love him. I don't think anyone can say a single bad thing about him. And that's not because I'm his mom. Everybody loves him,” said Austin, according to NBC News.

The shooter, who has yet to be named, was revealed to be a 15-year-old male student, and a sophomore at the school. A 911 call brought police to the scene two minutes after 8:57 a.m. The culprit was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of murder and 12 counts of assault in the first degree. After a probable cause hearing, prosecutors will begin the process of trying him as an adult, thereby making further details available to the public.
