Fifth Friday Brings Community Together
Being the fifth Friday in March, the Portales community held its annual Fifth Friday event in the town square on March 30.
Business owner and President of Main Street Committee Kamille Mountjoy expressed the committee’s desire to have an event for all ages which also captured the culture of Portales. “The event is not intended for fundraising but rather just a chance to bring the community together as a whole. From families to military personnel and college students, Fifth Friday is the start of the melting pot for community bonding,” said Mountjoy.
The outdoor event gave vendors the opportunity to interact with the community and gain exposure. Eastern New Mexico University grad, Staci Manley, enjoyed an evening of vending as she promoted her freelance graphic designs; the event was her first Fifth Friday. “It has been a great event to hand out business cards and gain connections, being a freelancer means I get to work with people’s budgets and have the main focus on their projects and develop final product customers are satisfied with,” said Manley.
While vending was one of the main attractions, Fifth Friday also consisted of a Car Show, dining, live music, and kid activities. Portales dance instructor Kelsey Prince opened the evening with her students as they performed an array of dance styles including movement, hip-hop, and ballet. “This was overall a great experience for the girls as lots of them have never performed in front of a crowd before, and the support of the crowd makes the girls love the sport that much more,” said Prince.
Prince also instructs an adult hip-hop class and encouraged parents to take time for them and attend a class. The dance studio will also be performing downtown Portales during Cinco de Mayo.
One the Eastern’s very own, Dr. Darrell Roe, attended the event and expressed that “Fifth Friday brings people from all over the community together to share an appreciation of the art and culture.” The next Fifth Friday event will be held on June 29, 2018.
