Greyhound pride was seen in abundance over the weekend as Eastern recognized past student-athletes’ accomplishments, as well as the legacy they left to inspire the current generation of Hounds.
Recent Hall of Honor inductee Cale Sanders, who had a strong career as an ENMU Greyhound wide receiver, had his name posted throughout the record books. Sanders led the hounds to three consecutive victories over West Texas A&M in the Wagon Wheel game and is considered one of the best ever offensive players to don the Greyhound jersey.
At the ENMU athletics hall of honors banquet, he spoke about his motivation and success at ENMU and the position it has put him in today.
“I was really just a skinny weird looking kid from Roswell that had a lot of determination,” Sanders joked. “I took full advantage of my time here at Eastern and definitely couldn’t have been successful without my amazing teammates at the time. There really are too many to mention, but without them, I wouldn’t have been the player or man I am today without their help.”
Sanders was very successful after his Eastern career with tryouts for the NFL but had a lot of injuries hampering him along the way.
“Of course, it wasn’t easy trying out for the big leagues and coming up short with injury issues, but everything I have and am today comes down to my wife.
She has supported me the whole way through my career, and I would be nothing without her and my children.”
Also, over the homecoming weekend, the 1993 Lonestar conference championship team was back on campus as played against MSU in a close five-game match that the Hounds lost. Notable attendees from of the 1993 team were Tamara Carrejo, Jenny Johnson Shoen, Jennifer Goble Poyer, Devonna James, Andrea Rucke, Liz Blackford Cornella, Cheri Coston Casanova, Coach
Mike Maguire and student assistant coach Sia Poyer.
“I live in California now and work for Google, so it was a long trip for me to be here but so worth it. I’m just really excited to see a game as I haven’t been to one in a long time,” said former Zia/Greyhound Rucke. “This school and team meant a lot to me while I was here, and it’s great to see they’re still a strong force in the conference.”
