Cross country

The Eastern New Mexico cross country teams traveled to Canyon, Texas, this past weekend to compete in the Lonestar cross country championships. Conditions were not ideal with the wind picking up to 20 mph as the morning went on. Senior Mercy Rotich placed first by some margin over the rest of the field, and the women’s team placed third overall, beating West Texas A&M to the bronze medal spot. On the men’s side, senior Shane Walsh led the Hounds home with a 22ndplace finish. The men’s team finished seventh place overall. The Greyhounds will now get ready for their biggest race of the season with the regional championships in Denver, Colo., on Nov. 17.

Eastern New Mexico University’s winning streak ended on Saturday afternoon as the team played Angelo State in their final Lone Star Conference game of the season. The Hounds struggled in the beginning after fumbling on their opening possessions, but in the second quarter, the Hounds were able to get on the scoring board when Hayden Hill picked up a loose ball and ran 20 yards to get the Hound’s first touchdown of the game.

It wasn’t long before the Rams found their footing again and were back in front with the score 14-7 to the Rams. The Greyhounds did have an answer to the Rams score, with junior running back Paul Terry breaking free for a touchdown to make it an even 14-14 with four minutes to go in the first half. In the last moments of the first half, Angelo made a break for it again, gaining ground for a touchdown with a 21-14 advantage going into the second half.

As the second half began, Angelo State were piling on the pressure, but the Hounds managed to set up junior Tyler Vargas to score a 52-yard field goal to make it a one possession game and bring the score closer, but that would be the closest the Greyhounds would get as the Rams handed eastern a defeat and closed out the game 34-17.
