Jim and Judy Chandler of Floyd received the annual Citizen of the Year award at the annual Floyd Jamboree event.

Floyd Lions Club presented Jim and Judy Chandler of Floyd with the Citizen of the Year Award Saturday night during the 69thannual Floyd Country Jamboree at Floyd Municipal Schools.

“Floyd is a great community, and I’m very glad to see my grandchildren grow up and go to school here,” said Jim Chandler after receiving the award.

The Chandlers’ friends and family, who were present for the award, said the couple enjoys motorcycle riding, as well as spending lots of time with their children and grandchildren.

The Chandlers said they were very overjoyed and received many congratulations from members of their community.

Community gatherings are joyous occasions that showcase the values people within them possess but even more so with smaller towns, like Floyd., according to attendees the Jamboree.

Each year, Floyd Lions Club puts together a big community gathering called the Floyd Jamboree, which acts as a fundraiser for the club to give scholarships and provide eye glasses to children in need.

The three-hour Jamboree showcases many talented people within the community, according to event coordinators, and is concert setting where citizens are welcome to come and listen to the talent presented.

To add to the fundraising aspect, a few members of the Floyd community construct a flag box in which the flags flown outside of the high school are placed. Those items were auctioned off, and the money raised went back to the Floyd Lions Club, which is used to fund other events and benefit Floyd schools.

Most who attend the Jamboree have been involved for years, such as Sherry Fahrenkrug, who said she has been part of the show for 16 years. Fahrenkrug is the set designer for the event. She said it is something she enjoys and looks forward to throughout the year.
