Keeping with Eastern New Mexico University’s motto, “Student Success – That’s What It’s All About,” the school has prepared many students for their futures.

Michelle Velo, a senior graduating this December with a bachelor’s degree in biology with an emphasis in ecology, evolution and organismal biology, said that she picked Eastern because it was close to home and affordable.

Velo said she enjoys being a part of the ENMU community. “The school environment has been really friendly,” she said.

“Everybody on campus is always open to meet new people and are helpful.” She also praised her advisor for assisting her throughout her college career. She believes professors at Eastern are helpful and dedicated to helping students succeed. Velo also noted a strong sense of community at ENMU. “Everyone is trying to network and get somewhere from here once we graduate.” She felt she had a great college experience at Eastern.

Devin Devargas, a vocal performance major at ENMU, plans to graduate this December as well. Devargas chose to attend Eastern after attending the school’s Choir Camp in 2014.

“I met some amazing faculty during … at the ENMU Choir Camp,” he said. Among those faculty were ENMU music instructors Jason and Kayla Paulk. He said he enjoyed his time during the camp. “I figured [ENMU] was a good fit for me.”

“The environment has been really great,” Devargas said. He also said he found it to be supportive and welcoming. “I’ve never had an issue with negativity. It’s always been positive, reassuring, and supportive. The professors have always been that for me and they want you to succeed.” He feels Eastern has equipped him to express himself as an artist.

Devargas said the best part of college was the connections he made. “I had the opportunity to meet so many amazing, talented and wonderful people that are all willing and ready to make beautiful music,” he said. “[The professors] express their art and share that with their students and then the world around them to make the world better…[I’ve] had the honor and privilege to make beautiful music with my colleagues and professors.

Devargas said that for him, ENMU cultivated an “energetic” and “nurturing” atmosphere, commenting on the pristineness of campus.

“I feel very prepared [for a career] after attending ENMU,” Devargas said. He plans to attend graduate school following graduation this winter.
