Eastern New Mexico University’s Office of Native American Affairs held a pizza social in the Alley in the Campus Union Building on Aug. 28. The event was free and open to all students.
The event coordinator, Loren Verduzco, said this social was meant to bring more people into the Alley to have fun and learn more about everything that both the Offices of Native American and Multicultural Affairs have to offer. Everyone that arrived was greeted with a warm smile and a slice of pizza. After everyone got a chance to get situated, the first event of the afternoon began.
The attendees stated their name, their major, and where they’re originally from. After introductions by both attendees and event coordinators, attendees played “Musical Chairs.” Chairs were placed in a circle at the end of the room, and the competitors took their places. Music started to play, and everyone began moving around the chairs. The music cut out abruptly, leaving one person without a seat. As this cycle continued, several people’s competitive tendencies started to show. The tension in the room grew while chairs were removed, with only those truly committed to winning remained. Each time the music stopped, the excitement of the crowd grew. After the game, the crowd cheered for the victor and the guests ate.
Although many organizations host events, there are varied approaches to getting the word out. One of the attendees, Joe, said that he saw the social on the ENMU calendar. He attended, hoping to write a paper for his freshman seminar class. One of the finalists in musical chairs, Carly, said her friend invited her to the event. She was looking forward to socializing with others, and of course, eating pizza.
ENMU offers several resources and services to help students succeed in their academic and social endeavors. Multicultural Affairs has several offices in the Campus Union Building Alley that are open to all students. The Office of Native American Affairs offers academic resources and scholarships to Native American students. They have a social calendar that includes the Miss Native American ENMU Pageant, guest speakers and social mixers.
The pizza social is one of many events hosted by the Office of Native American Affairs. Their office is located downstairs in the CUB, where they offer scholarships, counseling, and many other services for Native American students at ENMU.
