ENMU to Perform with New York Polyphony

Eastern New Mexico University will be hosting the New York Polyphony this Thursday at 7:00 P.M. This group has been nominated for several Grammy awards and has actually visited ENMU on several other occasions. After their last concerts, the group has worked with the university chamber singers, sharing their professional insights. The ENMU chamber singers, “24 Voices”, will be collaborating with the New York Polyphony this Thursday. “The New York Polyphony work with various institutions around the country, and they sing just absolutely stunningly.” said Dr. Jason Paulk, the Director of Choral Activities at ENMU.

The concert will include a piece of historical music titled Miserere mei, Deus, written by Gregorio Allegri. “This piece is just very stunning. It was guarded by the Catholic Church, and for many years was not allowed to be sung outside of the Sistine Chapel.” said Paulk. The collaboration between the ENMU Music Department and the New York Polyphony will bring to life a part of 1600’s history right here in Buchanan Hall.

The New York Polyphony has been reviewed by National Public Radio as a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts,” The group has shown an interest in bridging the gap between ancient and modern music, and has brought early music into the public spotlight. The New York Polyphony is currently touring, making stops in Santa Fe, Notre Dame, Times Square, Luxembourg and Germany after their performance here in Portales.

The New York Polyphony concert is brought to ENMU as a joint effort by the Friends of Music, who sponsors to ensemble, the student fees board of ENMU, and the ENMU Music Department. The concert will be taking place in Buchanan Hall this Thursday at 7:00 P.M., and will be conducted by Jason Paulk.
