On Jan. 30, Eastern New Mexico University students were able to take a break from the stresses of the start of the semester by participating in the Year 3000 Casino Night in the Campus Union Building.
Hosted by the ENMU Associated Students Activities Board, students were given $500 worth of ENMU poker chips upon their arrival to the CUB. If they had stopped by the ASAB table throughout the week, their starting amount was increased, according to Samuel Coronado, ASAB’s retention coordinator.
Students tested their luck at games including Bingo, Blackjack, Roulette, Texas Hold ‘em, Craps, and a Big Six wheel. ENMU staff and ASAB members, as well as community volunteers, stood in as dealers for the night. Whatever chips students had left when they were done could be traded in for tickets.
“Casino night is going wonderful, you know, we’re playing high stakes, we’re trying to get a max bet in so we can get a max return,” said Dre Campbell between bets at the Big Six wheel.
After all bets were closed, students dropped their tickets in buckets corresponding to prizes they hoped to win in a drawing. Some of those prizes included a cap and gown for graduation, a Bluetooth speaker, an Amazon Echo Dot, a carry-on sized rolling suitcase, Fitbits, lights to decorate a dorm room, Hydro Flasks, a weighted blanket and a movie night-themed box.
“I feel like I just left Chuck E. Cheese,” said Kameron Bowers between games of Texas Hold ‘em. He was eyeing up a Fitbit on the prize table and won one, thanks to all of his tickets.
Refreshments were provided by Sodexo and music played all night, adding to the casino atmosphere.
