Eastern New Mexico University welcomed renowned cellist Christopher

Adkins on Thursday, Feb. 6, where he was accompanied by ENMU’s

own Kayla Paulk as the collaborative pianist.

The concert was held in Buchanan Hall where many ENMU music

students were in attendance.

Adkins is a member of the Dallas Symphony. He is also an adjunct

associate professor of music at the Meadows School of the Arts at

Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Paulk is a vocal coach

and accompanist at ENMU.

Luis Burke, an ENMU music and education major, shared why the

concert was meaningful to him. “Here in the Portales area, we don’t

really get the chance to listen to string instruments in recital so I think

this a perfect opportunity to take advantage of listening to a cellist

perform.”

He commended the music department for their efforts in providing

opportunities for music majors and non-music majors alike to experience

amazing artists like Adkins on campus. “This whole department really

has so much excitement and so much great talent from every student as

well as every performer that comes,” he said, “it shines, honestly. It’s

like the littlest brightest start in the sky.” Burke added that hearing these

amazing artists in Portales is an awesome opportunity.

Originally from Texas, Adkins worked with symphonies in Milwaukee,

Wi., New Haven, Conn. and Denver, Colo. before joining the Dallas

Symphony in 1987 where he remains today. Beyond this, he also

performs with the Dallas String Quartet which has performed across the

U.S. and Europe.

During their concert, Adkins and Paulk delivered several notable

arrangements, including “Cinderella’s Stepsisters” from Cendrillon,

"Evening Prayer” from Hansel and Gretel and “The Fairy Garden” from

Mother Goose Suite.

ENMU’s music department was sure to thank Adkins and Paulk as well

as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principle Chair Endowment Program

for sponsoring the event.
