ENMU Chancellor Announces Resignation

According to reports from Eastern New Mexico University, the University’s System Chancellor, Jeff Elwell, informed the ENMU Board of Regents that he would be resigning, effective April 24, 2020.

The board was informed at a meeting in Portales, on April 17. Elwell has served as the president of ENMU-Portales since July 2017 and became the system chancellor in April of the following year.

Board of Regent President Terry Othick expressed the board’s gratitude toward Elwell for his service to ENMU for the last three years. “We wish him the best and look forward to continuing the work that he started,” said Othick.

Patrice Caldwell, ENMU Vice President for Planning, Analysis and Governmental Relations, has been named interim chancellor. Caldwell has served ENMU since 1980 as a faculty member, department chair, dean, executive director and vice president.

Othick expressed the board’s confidence in Caldwell, citing her almost 40 years of experience with ENMU as a tool that will ensure stable leadership during the upcoming transition period. “We are pleased that Dr. Caldwell is both willing and well prepared to lead ENMU.”
