Roosevelt General Hospital Prepared in Face of COVID-19

While cases of COVID-19 are low in Roosevelt County, Roosevelt General Hospital has taken extensive measures to properly treat cases and prevent contamination.

Jeanette Orrantia, executive director for the Roosevelt General Hospital Foundation assures the public that they have fully mobilized to be prepared for any cases that arrive. “There are many changes that have been made in effort to stem the spread of COVID-19, including all visitors to the hospital or clinic are pre-screening upon entering the parking lot,” she said. “Visitors are greeted by employees donning personal protective equipment and are asked a few screening questions and temperatures are taken,” she stated.

“Based on a visitor's answers, the visitor will be directed to the appropriate area of the hospital. All persons coming to the hospital who feel they have been exposed to COVID-19 are screened and treated in the mobile tent directly outside the emergency room department on the hospital campus.”

For those who feel they are experiencing symptoms, Roosevelt General Hospital is prepared to test for signs of the virus and treat patients at risk. “[T]he patient is swabbed, [and] the specimen is sent to the New Mexico Department of Health,” she said, emphasizing their efforts to provide the state with the most current information available. “Currently, it is taking about 3-7 days to return results to the hospital. As of [April 13], RGH has tested a total of 58 patients, with 51 negative results and seven pending.” Additionally, RGH has several ventilators on standby for COVID-19 patients.

Community members are encouraged to call them directly at (575) 356-9292 to discuss their symptoms with an experienced medical professional before they schedule their visit.
