Eastern New Mexico University to Hold December 12 Commencement Ceremony Online

In line with an unconventional semester, ENMU plans an unconventional graduation.

In the interest of public health and safety, Eastern New Mexico University students graduating this fall will be celebrated via an online commencement.

“We are working to provide a significant and memorable event that follows all the traditions of Eastern, all the way back to the beginning,” said ENMU President Patrice Caldwell. “We are working with the student body president, as well as getting ideas from the student senate, faculty senate, all to give students the most memorable experience possible.”

Professional production of the pre-recorded commencement will be handled by the KENW television station on campus, and will air as a livestream on Dec. 12 on enmu.edu. President Caldwell confirms that despite the online format, the ceremony will feature all the traditions of previous ENMU graduations, including speech, the carrying of the mace, and the turning of graduates’ tassels. The ceremony will conclude with a slideshow of photographs submitted by graduates to commend their time at ENMU as well as their accomplishments.

Facilitators of the ceremony are also reaching out to parents of graduates to record themselves commenting on the event and offering their congratulations.

“We’re trying to include special events, even though we know that won’t make up for it for it being online,” President Caldwell said, “but we hope to recognize the significance of the commencement.”
