Small Business Spotlight: Los Agaves
Los Agaves, an authentic Jalisco style food restaurant, opened in Portales at the end of 2020.
Los Agaves is a family-owned restaurant by Victor Rizo, Juan Leon, and Andrea Leon. They are originally from Jalisco Mexico.
Los Agaves restaurant was originally established in Artesia, making the Los Agaves in Portales the second branch. Rizo is the nephew of Juan Leon, the owner and founder of Los Agaves in Artesia. Rizo originally lived in Artesia but moved to Portales to open Los Agaves.
“I’ve heard good things about the people in Portales,” Rizo said when asked why he chose the town for the second location, “I liked the area.”
Due to entering a pandemic and the governor of New Mexico shutting down non-essential businesses, this past year has been difficult for many businesses, especially for restaurants. Restaurants were allowed to operate but only through drive thru or take out.
Despite opening during difficult times and at a limited capacity, Rizo states the people of Portales have welcomed the restaurant pretty well. “It has been difficult but thanks to God it’s been possible.”
Los Agaves’ Portales location is at 1126 W First Street. They’re open for both dine in and drive through Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Los Agaves offers a wide variety of foods such as steaks, tacos, enchiladas, seafood and breakfast. They also have the option to view their menu online on their Facebook page, Los Agaves-Portales.
Rizo emphasized his appreciation and enthusiasm for the community, saying, “Everyone is welcomed to taste our food, we have great customer service, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to showcase our restaurant to the community.”
